ADOC e-Commerce Center Opens in Jakarta

ADOCi has opened its e-Commerce Center in Jakarta on April 25th, 2007. It is the fourth Center operating in Indonesia under the joint effort between Indonesian Information Technology Federation (FTII) and the ADOC Secretariat of Chinese Taipei.

ADOC, which stands for Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APECi) Digital Opportunity Center, is solely funded by Chinese Taipei to implement its recommendation of 'Bridging the Digital Dividei Among APEC Members' at the APEC Leaders' Summit in Brunei in 2000. This recommendation was warmly welcomed by APEC Leaders, since it addressed problems brought about by uneven distribution of knowledge and access to information and communication technology (ICT).

Last year, the ADOC Secretariat established a Partner Office and three Digital Opportunity Centers at Inixindo, one of the FTII's members, located in Jakarta, Bandung and Yogyakarta, respectively. Each Center will provide over 300 people every year with a variety of training courses, tailor-made to fit local demand on e-commerce.

The ADOC Secretariat in Taipei will work closely with its Indonesian partners to explore issues such as e-Government and e-Industry in 2007. In addition, a number of Indonesian officials and members from the ICT industry will be invited to attend the 'ICT Elite Camp' in Taipei in July, where they will have two weeks of workshops on ICT policies, applications, best practices, and legal matters.

Besides Indonesia, other APEC members participating in the ADOC program include Chile, Peru, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, and Vietnam. Thailand is also joining this Program in 2007.

The APEC Leaders' Summit in Brunei in 2000 adopted the Brunei Goals, calling for APEC economies to triple the number of Interneti users by 2005 and to enable citizens in every community to have either individual or community access to the Internet by 2010. As one of the APEC economies, Chinese Taipei, viewed as one of the worldwide leaders in ICT, hopes to leverage its experiences and expertise in ICT and work with private and public organizations within APEC to answer the calls of the Brunei Goals.
