Two-day Davao innovation event to boost Mindanao’s software industry

DAVAO CITY, Dec. 2 (PNA) -- The Philippine Software Industry Association (PSIA), Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Davao, and the Davao Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. (DCCCII) will hold a two-day competition on December 3-4 as part of the Davao Innovation Month celebration to enhance the software industry.
Diane Suico, marketing program director of PSIA, said an entrepreneurship contest on software will be held on the first day. However, only eight software entrepreneurs have submitted entries to the contest with only a day away before the actual contest. Suico said the low number of entries is due to the lack of exposure of Mindanao’s software entrepreneurs to such kind of activity.
“For Mindanao, this activity is new that’s why there are only a few who submitted their proposals,” she said.
She said the activity is a step to expose software entrepreneurs to the industry.
“The concept is not stiff as they have to submit a mere description of their project but the ability to speak and write is significant on this activity,” she said.
On the second day, software entrepreneurs will be exposed to development connects an activity in which discussions on international marketing of software development industry will take place.
Bert Barriga of ICT Davao and DCCCII said at least three venture capitalists from Silicon Valley will participate in the discussions.
They will also serve as judges to the entrepreneurship software contest.
Barriga cited the talent problem on software development as among the focused topics of the three-day event.
He said the event will also serve as venue for IT graduates to determine their direction.
Barriga said the ICT Davao, DCCCII, and PSIA will join efforts in piloting the software entrepreneurship activity in five barangays in Davao City and 60 out-of-school youths.
“We will train them into virtual assistants and on social networking,” he said.
The undertaking is a step towards “how to engage the community in the software and IT perspective,” Barriga said. (PNA)
