The Liga Blue Tribe~-A-VayYegulatana, Student at the

Mobile Digital Opportunity Center

Story of Yang Sun Fung

The Liga Tribe is one of few Zo Tribe’s that has been able to conserve the original form of their land; it is also known as the Blue Tribe, a village full of abundant ecological resources. Their people could be defined as primitive and peaceful.

Yang Sun Fung is a typical Zo Tribe member, he lives with his cute daughter Xin-Xin in the utopia like valley nearby the Liga Wuchina River.

The river of Niya-Wuzhina has a camping site run by Yang known as Modobuyou (摩都布有), a quiet forest and a clean and curved river play beautifully together as if telling the legend of the Liga tribe.

Yang has been running the camping site for more than 10 years, starting in 1994. He started everything from ground-zero, slowly transforming the empty land into a beautiful camping yard for tourists. The Blue Tribe started to become popular after the aggressive promotion of the Alishan Administration Office. More people began to visit and appreciate the beautiful environment of the Liga Tribe.

The Liga Tribe is located in a deep remote area, certainly with no easy access to the internet. Chunghwa Telecom Co., Ltd. has assisted them to build their internet communication starting just a few years ago. The digital divide is quite wide, thus, the Institute for Information Industry decided to devote resources to hold mobile computing training courses for the benefit of the people in the Liga Tribe, giving their people a chance to start building their computer literacy.

After discussions with Xiu-Ying, the Liga tribe started to enroll students in the computer training classes; Yang was very enthusiastic in helping setting up the classrooms and advertising the courses; “It is a very good opportunity for the people of the Liga Tribe to learn about computers and increase their computer knowledge”, said Yang.

“Computer is a very convenient and important tool for everyone, almost any information can be obtained from the web, and people in the remote areas of Alishan do not need to travel all the way to the city to shop; life was boring prior to the arrival of computers and the internet; surrounded by the forest for a whole life made me feel I had been disconnected from the larger society; now I have access to the internet, I can browse the web to read the news, visit friends’ bloqs at leisure time and also chat with tourists who have visited the Liga Tribe before, to listen to their feedback and comments in order to make the camp site match the desire of the tourists”; said Yang.

“Having the role of the administrator has allowed me to learn how to write proposals and documents addressed to the government; word processing is very important to me because computers are used all the time to type documents and print. Even using email to communicate is critical, all of these elements are really saving us a lot of time on document traveling.  I think the benefits of computers are not limited to the use of word processing; it also gives us the opportunity to gather many of our residents together to learn how to use a computer; I can now chat with my daughter about computer gaming. I am very grateful to all of these fantastic changes that the Institute for Information Industry had brought to the Liga Tribe” also expressed by Yang.

However, good things don’t last long, the anticipated computer training courses in the August were cancelled because of the typhoon Morakot. The entire camping site was wiped out during the disaster. Had not been for the quick response and action of Yang on that day, who evacuated with her daughter Xin-Xin right away, they probably would have been part of the casualties.

“There is an old sayingBefore God entrusts a man with a ponderous task, He shall distress his mind, tire his limbs, famish his body, life is full of obstacles, everything will need to start all over again”, said Yang with a smile. The optimistic character of the entire Zo Tribe is definitely reflected on Yang’s attitude. We are happy to see he still believes in a bright future and we honestly wish he will overcome all the challenges that God puts on his path, and achieve his dream!
