Opening of Three ADOC Centers in Peru, Increasing Opportunity for all

ADOC Secretariat Office, Chinese Taipei
May 20th, 2011
APEC Digital Opportunity Center (ADOC) Secretariat is proud to open three new ADOC Centers in cooperation with local partners: Mujer y Sociedad, World Vision Peru and Colegio Mayor Secundario Presidente del Peru on May 20th, 2011. These ADOC Centers sponsored by ASUS Foundation aim to provide training on information and communication technology (ICT) for women and children, and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) that have encountered difficulty in gaining access to computers and are eager to gain knowledge of computer and e-Commerce. These ADOC centers seek to empower them to take full advantage of the digital opportunities afforded by ICT and the Internet.

ADOC opened its first large Digital Opportunity Training Center and project office in Peru in 2005 with the generous support of its local partner, PROMPERU. ADOC has opened 10 centers in Peru until 2010. Thus far, around 50,000 Peruvians have received training at the ADOC centers in Lima, Arequipa, Chiclayo and Lambayeque. These centers are the fruits of cooperative effort between Peru’s public and private sectors and the ADOC Secretariat Office in Chinese Taipei. Three new ADOC centers in Lima and Huancavelica opened today will aim to train around 750 women and children during its first year of operation.

ADOC project is a self-funded multi-year Economic and Technical Cooperation (ECOTECH) initiative that Chinese Taipei first raised in the 2003 APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting. It aims to assist in transforming digital divides into digital opportunities throughout the Asia-Pacific region. The first phase of the ADOC project was launched in August 2004 and was concluded at the end of 2008. The second phase ADOC project, ADOC 2.0 project, was proposed during the 2007 APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting and launched in 2009 by Chinese Taipei.

The training provided by ADOC includes not only ICT basic skills but also e-commerce and e-trading practices in order to empower the trainees with the ability to generate income and to improve quality of life. In collaboration with APEC PMEs, 69 ADOC centers have been established, and around 165,000 people have received training from August 2004 to December 2010.

ADOC 2.0 BLOG COMPETITIONS

During 2011 ADOC Secretariat plans to continue its ADOC Blog Competitions tradition, this time organizing two different Blog Competitions that can be joined by all our ADOC Centers in Partner Member Economies.

These activities’ primary objective is to strengthen the relationship between our ADOC Centers and trainees through a positive activity that allows trainees and trainers to share their stories, news, photographs, and relevant material that helps raise awareness on the importance of bridging the digital divide, while showing to the whole world the ICT skills they’ve acquired at our centers.

Additionally this activity will greatly encourage trainees to acquire and/or improve ICT skills required to design blogs, WebPages, articles, and various digital content; thus, continuing to encourage the adoption of ICT in people’s everyday lives. Through these Blog Competitions, ADOC hopes to raise awareness about the important role that ADOC training centers play in facilitating access to ICT and providing valuable education not only to the general public, but also to disadvantaged segments of many communities.

We sincerely hope you will be looking forward to these great activities. ADOC Secretariat is confident that its 2011 ADOC Blog Competitions will provide ADOC Partners with an excellent opportunity to promote the role of the ADOC Centers in their community, helping them to bring more trainees to their centers as a result of these activities’ sponsorship.
