Taipei, Oct. 22 (CNA) Canon Taiwan, Inc., a local subsidiary of Japan’s digital imaging solution provider Canon Inc., said Friday that it is scheduled to hold a job fair Nov. 12 in the hope of recruiting about 4,000 employees for a new plant in Chiayi, southern Taiwan.
The company said the event is aimed at luring job-seekers in the county, in neighboring Yunlin County and in other areas of southern Taiwan.
The company’s manpower demand has been created by company’s decision to build a new facility at the Chiayi Dapumei Intelligent Industrial Park.
Construction of the new plant, which broke ground in late September, is scheduled to be completed in April 2012 . The facility is expected to begin operating in July.
The Chiayi plant is Canon Taiwan’s second production base on the island and is part of Canon’s plans to expand its global production capacity. The company set up its the first local plant in Taichung in 1970.
Currently, Canon Taiwan has a workforce of about 6,000 employees, 91 percent of whom are locally hired.
The Chiayi county government said it is studying the feasibility of setting up a bilingual school in a bid to attract overseas talent to work in the county.
In addition to Canon Taiwan, the Chiayi Dapumei Intelligent Industrial Park hopes to accommodate more than 80 companies, according to the county government.

Taipei, Oct. 22 (CNA) Acer Inc., one of the world’s leading personal computer vendors, incurred more losses for the third quarter after massive losses recorded in the previous quarter amid slowing global demand and fiercer-than-ever competition.
Acer reported Friday it posted NT$1.1 billion (US$36.3 million) in net loss for the third quarter with a loss per share of NT$0.43. That’s after suffering a net loss of NT$6.79 billion or NT$2.57 per share in the second quarter.
During the July-September period, Acer’s consolidated sales totaled NT$117.31 billion, up 15 percent from the previous quarter, but down 30 percent from a year earlier.
Acer said despite the extended losses in the third quarter, the company’s sales improved from the second quarter, indicating its efforts in clearing piling inventory worked well.
In the second quarter, the PC vendor assigned US$150 million (NT$4.54 billion) in one-time write-off to clear its inventory in the Europe, Middle East and Africa operations and an additional US$30 million for reorganization.
In addition, Acer said after comparing two quarters’ operating losses on the same bases by deducting the one-time sales allowance and senior executive severance payments that took place in the second quarter, its operating loss margin for the third quarter has been narrowed from the second quarter.
However, the company did not disclose details about the operating loss margin. Acer has scheduled an investors conference for Oct. 28 to elaborate on its third quarter results.
Acer said since the inventory has fallen to a “reasonable” level after the massive write-off, the company expects its operations to improve gradually over the upcoming quarters.
In the first nine months of this year, Acer posted NT$6.71 billion in net loss or NT$2.55 per share, compared with NT$11.22 billion in net profit or NT$4.24 per share a year earlier.
During the nine-month period, Acer’s sales fell 27.7 percent from a year earlier to NT$347.2 billion.
Earlier this year, Acer Chairman J.T. Wang said the worst moment for Acer was a story of the past, adding that he glimpsed some hopes that the company could swing to profit in the fourth quarter.
In the third quarter, Acer ranked as the world’s fourth largest PC vendor, down from the No. 2 position it enjoyed in the corresponding period of last year, with its market share falling to 10.6 percent from 14.2 percent, according to Gartner, a market information advisory firm.

Taipei, Oct. 25 (CNA) AU Optronics Corp., (AUO) one of Taiwan’s leading flat panel display makers, said Tuesday that it incurred losses for the third quarter extending from the previous quarter due to falling product prices.
In the July-September period, AUO posted NT$15.8 billion (US$524 million) in consolidated net losses, compared with NT$10.8 billion in net losses recorded in the second quarter.
AUO’s loss per share for the third quarter stood at NT$1.79, compared with NT$1.22 in the second quarter.
The loss was worse than the market had previously expected, Horizon Securities analyst Benson Huang said, adding that the global flat panel sector needs more time to clear inventories before product prices can stabilize.
“I expect that AUO will continue to suffer losses in the fourth quarter, but the losses will be smaller, with product price falls expected to moderate,” Huang said.
In the third quarter, shipments of large panels — classified as 10-inches or larger — rose 0.2 percent from the second quarter to 29.7 million units, while shipments of small- and medium-sized panels rose 14.4 percent from the previous quarter to 52 million units.
During the three-month period, AUO’s capacity utilization fell to between 77 percent and 78 percent from about 80 percent in the second quarter, the company said.
In the first nine months of this year, AUO incurred NT$40.5 billion in net losses, compared with NT$18.75 billion in net profits recorded in the corresponding period of last year.
AUO Chief Financial Officer Andy Yang said that despite the falling product prices, the company has adopted appropriate measures on inventory adjustments, adding that inventory turnover time improved to 44 days in the third quarter from 46 days recorded in the second quarter.
Amid uncertainty over the market outlook, Yang said that the firm has cut its capital expenditure for 2011 to NT$60 billion from NT$70 billion and that he expects the figure for 2012 to fall within a range of NT$30 billion to NT$40 billion.
