ADOC Short Film Contest

In 2013, the ADOC Secretariat will continue its work with all the ADOCs by organizing the contest events through the ADOC website. The first contest will be the ADOC Short Film Contest. Starting from now, the ADOC Secretariat invites everyone who owns a camera or any recording device to join the competition!

The ADOC Secretariat believes that information and communication technologies (ICTs) have great potential for knowledge dissemination, effective learning and the development of local community. Through this film-making initiative, the trainees will have the opportunities to understand the potential of digital recording devices and practice their presentation and communication skills.

The participants are encouraged to present their short films with creativity and the engagement to the local communities. The short films which are submitted to the contest will be the showcases of efforts and results to bridge the digital divide in the ADOC Project…

The Samahan ng Mamamayan – Zone One Tondo Organization, popularly known as ZOTO, was formed during the Martial Law years in the Philippines in 1970. It was the time when the urban poor residents at the Tondo Foreshore Land faced demolished in favour of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Bank funded project. Affected residents bonded together to oppose the government’s plan to convert the area into an international port which would have displaced about 30,000 families.

How to participate the ADOC Short Film Contest?

1. Make a Film
Keep it short – the maximum length is up to 3 minutes – stick to the theme on “How we made it possible by the help of ADOC project and ICTs.”

2. Upload your short film
As long as you are happy with the final edited version, upload the short film to either YouTube or Vimeo in HD version.

3. Complete your Entry form at the event website
Submit your video link to http://www.apecdoc.org/site/sf2013/ by July 12, 2013

4. Promote your short film to the world
As soon as you have uploaded your work to either YouTube or Vimeo, share it to the ADOC Facebook Fan Page (https://www.facebook.com/adoc2.0) and any of your favorite social networks to get people’s attention!

On Monday, July 15, the ADOC Secretariat will announce the shortlisted films and publish the video links on the ADOC website for voting in the ADOC community. Filmmakers are encouraged to promote their films as much as they can in order to get more votes. During July 22 to 26, the top 5 films which have won the most votes will be reviewed by a panel of experts from the ADOC Secretariat and ASUS Foundation. Based on the originality, storytelling ability, presentation clarity, creativity and technical skills, a winner will be chosen and the winning filmmaker will receive a prize US$300.

The details of the ADOC Short Film Contest will be released on May 8 on the ADOC website at http://www.apecdoc.org/site/.

ADOC aims to support the development of Cusco local industry

APEC Digital Opportunity Center (ADOC) Secretariat is proud to open a new ADOC Centers in cooperation with PROMPERU on April 8, 2013. This ADOC aims to provide training on information and communication technology (ICT) in the local community that have encountered difficulty in gaining access to computers and are eager to gain knowledge of computer. This new ADOC seeks to empower them to take full advantage of the digital opportunities afforded by ICT and the Internet.

The ADOC in Cusco not only provides ICT training but also focuses on facilitating two clusters – alpaca textile and special coffee. Alpaca textile industry is one of the most important industries in Cusco and special coffee is an immerging market in the region. ADOC, with the support from PROMPERÚ and local government, associations, will invest resources into these two clusters in Cusco. ADOC Secretariat plans to help at least 5 local companies to develop their own e-commerce oriented website. The achievement of these two clusters is scheduled to present in the Cusco commercial show in the upcoming October.

ADOC opened its first large Digital Opportunity Training Center and project office in Peru in 2005 with the generous support of its local partner, PROMPERÚ. Until the end of 2012, 15 ADOCs have been funded and set up in Peru. Thus far, around 88,000 Peruvians have received training at the ADOCs in Lima, Arequipa, Chiclayo, Lambayeque and Huancayo. The centers are the fruits of cooperative effort between Peru’s public and private sectors and the ADOC Secretariat in Chinese Taipei.

The ADOC Project is a self-funded multi-year Economic and Technical Cooperation (ECOTECH) initiative that Chinese Taipei first raised in the 2003 APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting. It aims to assist in transforming digital divides into digital opportunities throughout the Asia-Pacific region. The first phase of the ADOC Project was launched in August 2004 and the second phase ADOC Project was proposed during the 2007 APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting and launched in 2009 by Chinese Taipei.

The training courses provided by ADOC includes not only ICT basic skills but also e-commerce and e-trading practices in order to empower the trainees with the ability to generate income and to improve quality of life. In collaboration with APEC partner member economies, 101 ADOCs have been funded and set up, and around 460,000 people have received training since August 2004.

Hi this is me and Nancy Wobo, this photo was taken at ADOC Centre @Unitech. my Name is Monica Ibsagi this is my first time to attend ADOC 2.0 Training @ ADOC centre here at unitech I am very gratefully to come and attend this one week workshop .This program ADOC is running it helps me more to understand my work by using computer.

I was very please that I can do my own printing by using computer @ ADOC 2.0 Training 2012 at ADOC Centre here at Unitech.Now I know how to use computer to do my work .I want to be in this photo contest with my friend Nancy Wobo we been attending this course together. This photo was taken while I and Nancy was touch smell notepad lap top computer @ ADOC Centre computer room. This is my first time to touch a small lap top like this one that’s why we both a looking at it and smiling This basic computer course was sponsor by ADV and ADRA head office here @ Lae Morobe Province.

This program WAS Run by ADOC Centre here at Unitech Lae. ADOC Centre here at Unitech Lae is running this sort course here for anyone who wants to get the basics of computer with ADOC Centre here by the assist of Mr David Decka. Me and Nancy was one of the trainer’s was attending this basic computer training, we both want to say thankyou to Mr. David Decka to help both of us to understand this basics of computer .Thanks ADOC to run this program. ADOC Successful Story

My name is Ann Nixon and I work for ADRA PNG SMALL ENTERPRICE DEVELOPMENT as a volunteer Area Supervisor for twelve solid years and a Youth and Pathfinder Leader of the SEVENTH-Day Adventist Church in my province. I have experiences in my field work but I am one of these many women in Papua New Guinea who knows how to talk and work well with people in the community and socialise, unfortunately a Computer illiterate. I’m happy that I now know about ADOC and how it helps the people of Papua New Guinea by its COMPUTING LITERACY PROGRAM. I appreciated APEC DIGITAL OPPORTINITY CENTER for its help in building up my knowledge and skills. ADOC changed my life because I can now use Computer at my work place, and I’m glade to inform my friends, youths and others to seek ADOC for help in COMPUTING .Thanks to APEC and ADOC Secretariat. I am thinking to ask for sponsors, fund me a computer set so I could use in my office set a programs activities and develop one way or the other the life’s of women and children of my province.

ADOC Successful Story

My name is Emmanuel Stewart Wakuri and I hail from a small District known as Ambunti in East Sepik Province in Papua New Guinea. I completed my 12th grade in 2009 and did not receive any offer to continue my studies and decided to travel to Lae which is the second largest city in PNG to search for better quality and affordable learning institutions in the city that suits my needs and career plans for my future.

I stayed in Lae and in September 2011, there was a Show known as Morobe Cultural Show and I was visiting University of Technology’s stall when I realized the Unitech ADOC Centre and asked the coordinator who has been kind to assist in providing the Centres course information and the UPNG ADOC Centre’s information as well. I then later in October enquire to study a week long course with the Unitech ADOC Centre and was given a space to study the Basics Computer Literature Course. I later realise that, I was able to study in an environment where I have the privileged to use a Computer per person with the use of Projector and Slides to lecture by the tutor to lecture to us.

I took up the week long course and realized that, within one week, I have already knew how to type a letter, able to know the functions of keyboards and the most interesting thing that I learned while attending the UNITECH ADOC Centre’s course is, I was able to create an Email Address which I can hardly forget ADOC for a great achievement I achieved in my life to have an email address while a student at ADOC Centre in Lae. With the knowledge I learned from the ADOC Centre in Lae, I then applied by emailing a letter to enquire to study at International Training Institute College in Lae.

They approved my letter and I am currently studying at ITI.With the basic knowledge of Computing from ADOC, I am progressing well with my studies at ITI. I am very much pleased and would like to appreciate the ADOC Centre for what it has done to my life and I have enquired to come for a further advance courses offered at the Unitech ADOC Center. I would like to build my life as a simple living example to others what the ICT development skills have to do with the current living standard in Papua New Guinea. I personally would like to thank the Unitech ADOC Center and ADOC Secretariat and other contributing organization for the wonderful opportunity center here in Papua New Guinea.

ADOC success story

This is a story written by the Unitech coordinator who interviewed one of a trainee of the center. Unitech ADOC Center is located in the second largest city of Papua New Guinea and situated in a university (UNITECH). People in and around the city do pay visit and see road show events that were done to promote the Unitech ADOC Center. Papua New Guinea has only two APEC Digital Opportunity Center namely Unitech ADOC Center and UPNG ADOC Center. The above picture shows a drop out student from grade 12 at his village in Bougainville (North Solomon Province) and come to the city looking for opportunities which could change his life and at least earn an income. He his young and energetic as seen from the picture. He comes to the Unitech ADOC Center when he heard from a church group he attends. He registered his name with the church group and UNITECH ADOC Center invited the group to come for a Basics Computer Literacy course. He develops his skills and knowledge with the course offered. As seen from the picture I took him out of his workplace to get a photo of himself which I could share with other at the ADOC 2.0 Photo Contest 2012. Currently he is with the working uniform where he works as a counter service attendant in printing and editing document for the university students who are unfortunate to the privilege of having a computer or a printer. Now he appreciates the Unitech APEC Digital Opportunity Center for the training he had at the center. He has enquired to come for a further advance courses offered at the Unitech ADOC Center. He wishes to build his life as a simple living example to other s what the ICT development skills have to do with the current living standard in Papua New Guinea. My name is JNR CLIVE PATRICK from East Sepik Province. My village is located along the Sepik river in a small district name AMBUNTI DISTRICT. I’m actually 20 years of age (Born JUNE 4 1991) In 2006 I completed my grade 8 studies at ST PAULS PRIMARY SCHOOL here in LAE with the success of continuing my upper level studies of doing my grade 9 and 10 at BUSU SECONDARY SCHOOL LAE (PNG)…. Well from there I successfully completed my 9 and 10 studies but got fail in numeracy so in 2011 I applied at INTERNATIONAL TRAINNING INSTITUTE and was accepted to do my certificate in business which I had another problem with finance so I did not complete my studies there and I have to come back home and start looking for something else to do… So currently this year (2012) I started a soccer team which was name after my adopted mums company (NUIGINI APARREL BLACKS) but something special in my life is still there… Actually I meet someone who was my adopted mums drinking mate he was a cool handsome guy n I really like him so he started introducing me to this website and all about ADOC and its really pulls my interest so I ask him 2 help me and sure he did… But also down deep in my heart I know that something to do with computer it will help me and I will still catch up…. In our life today every business house like store, hotel, lodge, school etc they all deal with computer and this is true computer is the money making device in the world today and I really find it easy in everything I do with computer and I know ADOC really helps people like me…. My final word of advice to whoever like me is out there always remember that life does not end if your tomorrow comes so please seek and you shall find like for me ADOC really helps me and I believe and that I can also be somebody in future if my tomorrows comes…. ADOC Success Stories: The Importance of ADOC at UNITECH and Its Impact on My IT Skills

In August 2006, ADOC Secretariat established its first APEC Digital Opportunity Center in Papua New Guinea in collaboration with Unitech University. Being the first time our university would have access to state of the art computer equipment, all of us had a good reason to be excited. Stanley Osao, Library IT support staff and newly appointed Manager of the UNITECH APEC Digital Opportunity Center, gave library staff priority to participate in training programs and access the center’s facilities.

When we heard the news, all of us in the library staff were looking forward to this remarkable opportunity. The training sessions began soon, and we were completely delighted to use such modern equipment. The environment at the centre was pleasant and hospitable; we couldn’t have asked for more. At our first Power Point training, we learnt the basics of using this practical application. Just trying to find the right colours for the presentations so that they blended in with the graphics was a new thing for all of us, not to mention how difficult it was to make sense of the slide features. By the end of the training, we felt that the skills we had learnt were very valuable and would be lifelong lessons that would help us to convey professional presentations.

I am, therefore, sincerely thankful to UNITECH and ADOC for this APEC Digital Opportunity Center. Its establishment atUNITECHUniversity and especially the services it provides to the Matheson Library have opened doors leading to digital opportunities for students, faculty, and the general public ofPapua New Guinea.
