MATU: Igan MP Datuk Abdul Wahab Dolah recently presented 500 units of 1Malaysia laptops to students from three secondary schools — SMK Matu, SMK Agama Igan and SMK Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Hajah Normah Daro — under Igan parliamentary constituency, courtesy of Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) under the National Broadband Iniative (NBI)
The presentation ceremony took place at Dewan Masyarakat Kampung Tian here on Thursday.
It was also attended by assistant director of MCMC Sarawak region Shaiful Sandi, school principals and community leaders.
According to Shaiful, the 500 1Malaysia laptops were part of the 60,000 units allocated to Sarawak under the second phase of NBI in addition to the 14,500 units successfully given out to students under the first phase of NBI in Sarawak,
following the launching of National High Speed Broadband (HSBB) project by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak on March 24, 2010 last year.
Meanwhile in his speech as guest-of-honour, Datuk Abdul Wahab thanked the federal government, particularly Ministry of Information, Communication and Heritage Malaysia and MCMC for giving the 1Malaysia laptops to the students in Igan parliamentary constituency.
Wahab was optimistic that the laptops could help students to get more information and knowledge from the internet in order to achieve good examination results as well as enhancing their knowledge and skills with regards to information and communication technology (ICT).
Wahab also took the opportunity to call on teachers, students and their parents to make full use of other facilities such as Community Broadband Centre, Wireless Internet Protocol (WiFi) at village and town areas, CBC To Home, Community Broadband Library and many other ICT-related facilities set up by BN government to broaden ICT literacy and knowledge and also to ensure greater broadband penetration among households in Malaysia, in line with the government’s HSBB project.
While saying that ICT literacy can improve the income and livelihood of the people, Wahab called on the people in Igan constituency to make full use of the internet and modern communication gadgets in business, employment, marketing and other socio economy fields to support the government’s vision of producing a high income society in the near future.
