The launch was also marked by the availability of Adobe* AIR applications, as well as apps from companies including Accuweather*, Barnes & Noble*, Funkitron*, Gibson Guitars*, iWin*, Kaplan*, KONAMI*, and Lifetime*.

In an effort to reach netbook owners worldwide, James announced agreements with Best Buy*, UK-based Dixons* and India-based Croma* to outfit each retailer with the Intel AppUp center – pre-installed on netbooks the stores sell, as well as available for current netbook owners to download online. Similarly, James announced plans from ASUS* to ship its version of the Intel AppUp center on netbooks, the "asus app store," starting in October.

During her keynote, James highlighted the Intel AppUp Developer Program, designed to drive innovative applications for end users and new revenue opportunities for independent developers and software vendors with programs such as the Intel Million Dollar Development fund. Rick Vanner from The Game Creators was recognized as winner of the "Most Innovative Application" in the Intel Atom Developer Challenge for his game titled, "Goals." James also introduced the "On Intel AppUp" ISV identifier, designed to help developers promote their applications on Intel AppUp center.

James acknowledged seamless experiences are only part of the equation. Open operating systems – such as Intel and Nokia’s* MeeGo*, hosted by the Linux Foundation – allow developers to create, invent and innovate. Pointing to contributions from industry leaders, James discussed MeeGo ecosystem momentum, highlighting a variety of MeeGo-based devices and how third-party software developments and the upcoming MeeGo Web runtime, to be released in October, will make it easier to write applications for these devices. Internet TV pioneer Amino* also joined James onstage to demonstrate how the company is taking advantage of the flexibility and openness of MeeGo to deliver an innovative MeeGo-based smart TV solution.

PREPARING FOR THE NBTC

Like a lotus born in the mud, the new Thai regulator NBTC may arise like a beautiful flower after the 3G auction mess. It could do what NTC lacked the mandate to achieve: a distinct Thai model of digital convergence that could trigger the equitable growth economy which can bring the nation back together.

Here are three reasons why NBTC do this, when NTC could not:Sure, it will take some months for this flower to bloom, perhaps a year.  But that year is needed, because it buys time for researchers to present the new NBTC regulators on Day One with a plan to interlink the full power of all media for the benefit of all Thais.  It could correct the mistakes of Malaysia, South Korea and Singapore which each has leaped into ubiquitous broadband without asking themselves broadband’s true purpose.

The B word (broadcasting):   By adding broadcasting to telecommunications, the new regulator has the mandate to influence content as well as infrastructure.  It could be the author of a comprehensive broadband ecosystem could integrate the full power of multimedia to fulfill explicit national goals.

The P word (policy):  At last, the regulatory agency has the benefit of being guided by an inter-ministerial National Broadband Committee.  At last, the PM, the Foreign Minister and the ICT Ministry are all on the same page.   Let them go behind closed doors and emerge a coherent framework for how public and private operators can combine their separate strengths to make broadband affordable, usable and empowering for all Thais.

The S word (sufficiency economy):   NBTC is not limited to the conventional functions of regulation, such as "creating a competitive environment" or "extending access."  Hidden deep in the legal language is a surprising phrase:   NBTC must further the King’s ethical concept of "sufficiency economy."  Other than tiny Bhutan, Thailand will be the only telecommunications regulator which is driven by such an ethical mandate.  Once it is clear to NBTC that the purpose of broadband is to "unlock human development," all other decisions can flow from that mandate.

To turn these three factors in a vibrant plan of regulatory innovation, researchers must look beyond competing interests to provide answer to these six questions:

1) What are the benefits – and the harm – that broadband can bring to the nation?   Thailand needs its own answer to this question, not one borrowed from South Korea or the World Bank.

2) What in fact is the optimal role for 3G, Wimax, Fiber and Satellites?  How should they complement each other?

3) How should spectrum and "universal service" taxation policies be altered to force mobile supply chains to innovate produce "data services" that bring wealth and learning (not just entertainment) to Thais who earn less than 12,000 baht per month?

4) How should NBTC and the government pool their efforts, combining "sticks" (of regulation) with "carrots" (of government subsidy) so markets empower Thai youth rather than addict them.

The answers to these questions are not readily available through any survey of "international best practices."   They must come from the best thinking of the best Thai researchers drawing upon the best data.   Furthermore, all the answers cannot be found among the engineering and computer science faculties of Thai universities.   Researchers in non-technological disciplines (economics, management, anthropology, communications, political science, even philosophy) must join in. Also, the whole spectrum of cabinet ministries, ranging from agriculture to tourism, must join, drawing the Ministry of Science and Technology as their aggregator.  Once they find their core research questions, these researchers can engage and challenge the thinking of the so-called Thought Leaders who are conceiving next-generation technologies in the big international labs of the West, Japan, China and India.   With the help of these researchers, NBTC would able to anticipate and absorb worldwide innovations which will double bandwidth’s power every year through the 21st century.

Can this research campaign happen?  Yes!

Luckily the National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT), chaired by the Prime Minister, which oversees the research needs of the nation, has stepped forward at this crucial time.   NRCT will join with Chulalongkorn’s Digital Divide Institute and a coalition of other universities on October 29 to announce a research coalition that aims to prepare the NBTC for the tasks ahead.  They will offer the vision that may not only shape the direction of the new regulatory body, but the future of Thailand itself.

Craig Warren Smith is Senior Advisor at University of Washington Human Interface Technology Laboratory,  and Chairman, Digital Divide Institute of Chulalongkorn University (DigitalDivide.org). Prof Smith may be contacted atcraigwarrensmith@hotmail.com

Asia-Pacific demand for mobile data services increases as mobile voice declines, finds Ovum

Asia-Pacific’s mobile phone market will see a continued decline in voice revenues over the next five years, as intense competition continues to push prices lower, finds Ovum.

However, the picture at the country level is patchy. India, China and Indonesia, being the growth engines of the region for new connections, show continued growth in mobile voice revenues despite falling ARPU. But in developed markets like Australia, Hong Kong, Japan and Korea, where connection markets are saturating, we foresee rapid mobile voice revenue declines, According to new figures released by the independent telecoms analyst, Mobile regional and country forecast pack 2010-15, revenues generated in the Asia-Pacific through voice services will fall from USD 182 billion in 2010 to USD 176 billion in 2015. The trend is driven by falling ARPU in competitive markets, outweighing overall growth in connections and minutes of use.

At the same time, there will be a healthy growth in revenues generated from mobile data services, with an increase from USD 84 billion in 2010 to USD 133 billion in 2015. We foresee both rising data connections and data rising ARPU as more consumers in Asia-Pacific opt to use more text, email, social media and video on their mobiles.

Overall, we expect total Asia-Pacific mobile revenues to increase only from USD 267 billion in 2010 to USD 310 billion in 2015. However, Ovum sees total connections increasing from 2.6 billion to 3.8 billion over the same period.

David Kennedy, AP Research Director at Ovum, said: "Data is now a key driver of the mobile market and revenues will continue to grow steadily". By 2015 there will be a much narrower gap between the revenues from voice and data and if data continues to grow at the same rate, it will eventually go into the lead.

"It is a reflection on the way the market is moving; voice services have become commoditized, while demand for access to the internet on the move has grown rapidly," concludes Kennedy.

Innovation for the sake of better lives

LG determined to stay in front of fast-changing field

Just think of mobile phones, and how they have evolved from simple gadgets to personal lifestyle computers – all in a few short years. We are living in the digital age, and it seems that technology and innovation are popping up in every aspect of our daily lives.

Nowhere is the pervasive influence of technology and innovation more awesome than at the world’s largest trade fair for consumer electronics and home appliances, the IFA exhibition in Berlin. The barrage of gimmicks, gadgets and ground-breakers is staggering.

Among them, Korean giant LG Electronics showed the innovative style of an industry leader with its built-in kitchen solutions and cutting-edge technologies for home appliances – all of it claiming to increase the quality of our lives.

While showcasing its latest home appliances, LG unveiled a new mobile-phone application called LG Clean Home Alert. Working with mobile phones using the Android operating system, the application will take all your information and details of your activities, then – every so often – will alert you to the need to clean up your home.

The application not only alerts busy housekeepers to the need to clean their homes, but also offers tips on the use of the latest appliances to increase the home comforts.

At the Berlin fair, LG announced two new products, the LG Styler and a robotic vacuum cleaner, as well as four new technologies.

The LG Styler is a new-concept clothes manager. It comes with a steam generator, moving hangers and a heat-pump system to remove wrinkles, deodorise, sanitise and dry clothes.

"The LG Styler will also take care of sanitising your bedding, baby clothes, towels and your children’s soft toys. It will also help to keep your clothes looking and smelling fresh," said LG’s marketing manager Lee Jun, adding that the company had launched the product in Korea this year and it would introduce it to global markets in the near future.

The robotic vacuum cleaner is claimed to have a unique combination of camera, ultrasonic and infrared sensors. It can find its way into every nook and corner and can navigate to any spot in the home, cleaning the entire floor with a minimum of effort on the part of the owner.

"The next generation of home appliances will focus on providing consumers with something better – helping them towards a smarter lifestyle," said LG Electronics Home Appliances president and chief executive Lee Young-ha. "LG incorporates four core technologies into its premium products – inverter direct drive, linear compressors, lightwave technology and kompressor technology. These provide reliable and eco-friendly value, helping consumers to upgrade their lifestyles."

Its inverter direct drive technology allows LG to provide eco-friendly and durable washing machines with larger capacity, reduced noise levels and reduced energy consumption. The new generation of inverter direct drive machines also comes with six motions, allowing a new level of care for different fabric textures.

Linear compressors are claimed to be a breakthrough in refrigerator design. With a unique direct-transmission system, linear compressors minimise mechanical loss to increase durability, while reducing noise and cutting energy consumption.

Lightwave technology is a new innovation in LG’s cooking appliances, delivering food with chef-quality flavor in the comfort of the home. It even creates healthier foods by retaining nutrients and reducing cholesterol and fat.

Kompressor technology involves vacuum cleaners, and what LG says is the world’s first motorised compressor.

Lee said LG was also developing what it called "smart experiences", creating the ultimate in integrated home appliances that combine convenient use with outstanding design.

In order to become the world’s leading electronics company, LG operates a global research and development network and is strengthening its core technological capabilities. In 2009, the company invested 2.6 trillion won (Bt68.91 billion) in R&D. This year, it will invest 3.6 trillion won in R&D and expand its global manufacturing capacity.

In LG’s home appliance company, this year’s R&D budget will go towards emerging business categories such as built-in appliances and health-conscious products, which the company sees as future growth engines, as well as flagship products. The company believes that consistent investment in R&D will pay off by generating differentiated products and a competitive edge, aligned with its unique technologies.
