Peru will lead the growth of spending on information technology and communication (ICT) in Latin America this year. An increase of five to seven percent, well above countries like Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Mexico.

He explained that this year the telecommunications market in the country will continue to grow but at a slower pace and, as in Latin America, cable television and / or digital is the sector likely to retract their growth.

Similarly, the fixed telephony market could stagnate, but the situation be reversed if the Economic Stimulus Program (EEP) of the government's immediate objective includes the universalization of this industry through the Telecommunications Investment Fund (Fitel).

And while the mobile market may slow due to the slowdown in economic activity, there is still considerable room for growth, especially in the interior.

He said that in recent years the country has demonstrated notable progress in household access to fixed telephony, Internet, cable TV and phone.

According to the National Household Survey (NHS) National Statistics Institute (INEI), the rate of mobile phone penetration has increased more than eightfold from a rate of 6.5 to 56.7 percent between 2000 and 2008 , said the Lima Chamber of Commerce (CCL).

These figures show the one hand, democratization of telecommunications in different parts of Peru and, secondly, the large market space in terms of item that companies could develop, especially in rural areas, said the magazine Business Business & CCL.

With what other potential revenue of mobile phone operator would enhance this opportunity and would reduce rates.

In addition, another factor to promote competition in the market is number portability, which would keep the cell phone number when switching to another company, a feature that will run from 2010.

The degree of progress in household access to fixed telephony is still very limited, especially in rural areas. While in Peru the rate of density (lines per 100 inhabitants) is 9.7, in Latin America reached 18.3 and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), amounts to 35.6.

The FTC found that the unprofitable for the private sector in the provision of this service in rural areas and the high concentration of fixed telephony in one enterprise, are important factors explaining this gap.

In that sense, it is expected a further boost public sector through greater concessions promoted by Fitel to reduce the gap of telecommunications in these areas within the agenda of government activities PEE.
