Rainfalls Increase Hydropower And Decrease Use Of Costlier Energies Like Coal And Diesel Fuel The heavy rainfalls that doused Santiago and Chile's southern regions this week are expected to lead to lower energy costs. "Rainfall improves our energy reserves and reduces the cost and deficit of the entire energy system," said Energy Minister Marcelo Tokman. Recent rains decreased energy reserve deficits from 26 percent to 23 percent, authorities said. Add to that a 10 percent increase in hydro-power generation -- up from 50 to 60 percent in the past two weeks -- and residents should see a drop in their energy costs in the coming months. It's a simple equation: The rainfalls feed Chile's hydro power system, naturally restocking its reservoirs. More rains mean lower costs to produce energy and, ultimately, lower bills for residents. Use of this renewable energy source will reduce reliance on more expensive energy sources such as diesel or coal, said Renato Agurto from energy consulting firm Synex. The greatest savings will be seen by electricity dependent businesses, which consume much more electricity than residential households. "The fall in marginal costs should result in a decrease in customer rates by October - if the value of the dollar remains steady," said Sergio Zapata, a Banchile insurance representative.
